JACOBITE TOUR OF SCOTLAND AND ROME
JACOBITE – SCOTLAND
Have you ever dreamed about visiting Scotland and following in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites?
A Jacobite tour with Borders Journeys is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the history, heritage and culture of Scotland and the Stuarts.
Your tour will take you from the elegance of Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyrood House to Stirling Castle and from Loch Shiel at Glenfinnan to Culloden Battlefield and Glencoe to the Isle of Skye – all of which were very familiar to Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite supporters.
I will create you an exclusive tailor-made Jacobite tour with you in mind. You will visit the places and attractions that played centre stage nearly sixty years of Scottish history. Many locations can be visited using Edinburgh or Glasgow as a base, except for those in the Highlands, which require an overnight stay in Inverness.
During your tour, you will have the unique opportunity to stay at Traquair House*, Scotland’s oldest continually inhabited house that dates from 1107. It was at Traquair that Bonnie Prince Charlie visited his distant kinsman, the Earl of Traquair, in October 1745 to recruit support for the Jacobite cause. As he left the house the Earl promised the gates would not be reopened until a Stuart king returned and the famous Bear Gates have been closed ever since. The house has hosted 27 Kings and Queens including Mary, Queen of Scots and her infant son the future King James VI of Scotland (King James I of England). The cradle used by Mary for James is on display in the house along with a fabulous collection of Stuart and Jacobite artefacts. You can live like royalty for a night as you sample the delicious Traquair House Ales in your private Drawing Room and have exclusive use of the magical grounds. Following a sublime full Scottish breakfast in the morning, you’ll be given a short private tour of the house by Catherine Maxwell Stuart, 21st Lady of Traquair.*

JACOBITE – ROME
Did you know that the exiled Stuart Royal Court was based in Rome? Just imagine following in the Stuarts’ footsteps around Rome’s famous avenues and piazzas.
There is an option to extend your Jacobite tour to Rome. I will continue to be your guide by escorting you around the eternal city, visiting the places familiar to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Stuart Royal Court. During your stay in Rome, you will visit the Palazzo Muti, Basilica dei Santi Apostoli, St Peter’s Basilica (Vatican), Basilica di Santa Maria in Domnica and Chiesa di Sant’ Andrea al Quirinale – all places that were familiar to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Stuart Royal Family. Throughout your visit, there will also be plenty of time to visit other city landmarks including the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. No visit to Rome is complete without a long leisurely lunch in a picturesque square, dinner in a quiet family run trattoria or enjoying gelato from the city’s famous Gelaterias.
