Edinburgh’s Castles and Palace Tour
Edinburgh’s Castles and Palace Tour
Edinburgh’s castles and palace bear witness to the city’s turbulent history.
Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline of Scotland’s capital. Since the 12th century, the castle has played centre stage to much of the city’s turbulent military and royal history.
Just a mile away at the bottom of the Royal Mile is the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The palace was residence dozens of Scottish and British monarchs; today it is still the official residence in Scotland for the British monarch.
The ruins of Craigmillar Castle are three miles from the city the centre. The castle dates from the late 14th century and paid host to Mary, Queen of Scots in 1566. Fans of Outlander will recognise the castle as Ardsmuir Prison during Season 3.
This is a walking tour; therefore, comfortable footwear and suitable outdoor clothing is recommended. Don’t forget your camera!
